Jeff Frey, MD

Primary Care Medical Director

Dr. Frey has served as the collaborative physician for the Nurse Practitioners at Spectrum Health Care’s Primary Care Clinic since opening in 2017.

Born in Ossining, NY, he attended public school and then went on to Cornell University for undergraduate study.  From there he moved on north to Upstate Medical School in Syracuse, where he completed his residency.  After 11 years of cold weather, he joined the U.S. Public Health Service and was assigned to the clinic in San Juan.  It was there he learned to speak Spanish. He then joined the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans in 1981 where he served as an attending physician for 10 years.  He also studied Geriatric Medicine there and became board certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. Dr. Frey is fellow in the American College of Physicians and is the author of a few scientific papers and a textbook chapter.

Although retired from private practice in Columbia, Dr. Frey has lived here in Columbia, MO for 30 years. He loves teaching and providing direct patient care. One of his favorite aspects of his work with Spectrum’s Primary Care Clinic is that he gets to enjoy the diversity of the patients who choose the clinic for their health care. “It is enriching to be able to hear and share different people’s view on the Universe.” Most of all, he says, “I believe I can make a genuine difference in people’s health.”

And so, what does Dr. Frey’s do for fun?  “I really enjoy the beach, but alas we don’t have one here and the lake just doesn’t do it for me.  I enjoy skiing and was a ski instructor while still in medical school.  I love sailing and even managed the Puerto Rican Laser (sailboat) team for the Pan Am Games in 1979.  I coached Soccer in Columbia for 6 years. Still one of my all-time favorite activities is spending quality time with my three sons who live here in Columbia: Jeffery, Charlie, and Ben.”
